The Role of Drug Counselors in a Hospital Drug-Cure Program

Published Online:https://doi.org/10.1176/ps.24.12.839

Twenty-three paraprofessional drug counselors are employed in a hospital drug abuse program operating on the theory that an individual who has resolved his problem can serve as a role model for others with the same problem. The author describes the roles of the counselors on the drug detoxification and milieu wards as well as in admissions, case conferences, specialty therapy, rehabilitation, and the outpatient program. He also describes some of the difficulties in integrating counselors in a traditionally oriented setting.
