Web Sites Worth Watching

Psychiatric Services offers a monthly listing of mental-health-related Web sites and other sites of interest. The list changes monthly as new sites are identified, existing sites add new features, and different categories of sites are included. National GAINS Center for People With Co-Occurring Disorders in the Criminal Justice System—www.prainc.com/gains/The GAINS center is operated by Policy Research, Inc., of Delmar, New York, in collaboration with the Louis de la Parte Florida Mental Health Institute, with sponsorship of several federal agencies, including the Center for Substance Abuse Treatment and the Center for Mental Health Services. The GAINS center gathers and disseminates information about effective mental health and substance abuse services for people with co-occurring disorders who come in contact with the criminal justice system. The center's Web site offers several free publications, including summaries of key treatment issues and the elements of an effective jail diversion program, a fact sheet on the prevalence of co-occurring disorders in the criminal justice system, and full-text papers detailing screening and assessment approaches and intervention strategies.

American Academy of Addiction Psychiatry—www.aaap.org In addition to general information about the association and membership, the site includes tables of contents, author guidelines, and subscription information for the association's newsletter and journal, American Journal on Addictions.

American Society on Aging—www.asaging.org The site offers information about ASA, a learning center, and publications listings. A section called "networks" addresses the effect of aging in multiple areas, such as in business, in gay and lesbian and multicultural populations, and in religion and spirituality.

It contains tabular and graphic information about U.S. AIDS and HIV case reports, including data by state, metropolitan statistical area, mode of exposure, sex, race and ethnicity, age group, vital status, and case definition category.

All Health—www.allhealth.com An outgrowth of one of the first online health communities, All Health is now one of the Web's most visited health sites. It features magazine-type coverage of health news, on-line support groups, and databases of articles by experts on a wide range of conditions.

Mental Health Statistics Improvement Program—www.mhsip.org Visitors to the site can learn about MHSIP's efforts to develop standards for mental health data and gain access to documents in the MHSIP library.

Women Halting Online Abuse—whoa.femail.org Designed to educate the Internet community about on-line harassment, how to protect oneself, and how to empower victims of harassment. The site encourages users to make suggestions and formulate voluntary policies that Internet systems can adopt in order to create harassment-free environments.
