Web Sites Worth Watching

Psychiatric Services offers a monthly listing of mental-health-related Web sites and other sites of interest. The list changes monthly as new sites are identified, existing sites add new features, and different categories of sites are included. Associations

American Association for Retired Persons—www.aarp.org The association's Web site includes a section on health and wellness of elderly persons, with specific subject headings such as caregiving, nursing homes, and research.

Journals

PharmSci—www.pharmsci.org/journal/Published by the American Association of Pharmaceutical Scientists, this on-line journal offers full text of current and previous issues, along with a searchable index. Visitors can contact the editor directly via e-mail, read current news in the field, and visit the journal's on-line sponsors.

Government

NIH Consensus Development Program—odp.od.nih.gov/consensus/ The program, managed by the Office of Medical Applications of Research, holds conferences that produce consensus statements and technology assessment statements on issues important to health care providers, patients, and the general public. The site includes lists of these statements, as well as news releases and information on upcoming conferences.

Health Care Financing Administration Patients' Rights Conditions of Participation—www.hcfa.gov/quality/4b1.htm This question-and-answer document provides general guidance on the interim final rule on patients' rights, including seclusion and restraint.

Drug Infonet—www.druginfonet.com This independent, unsponsored site was created two years ago by a pharmaceutical market researcher. It provides a range of valuable and clearly organized information, including details from package inserts and consumer pamphlets for many drugs, links to manufacturers' sites, an "Ask the Expert" section, and other resources.

The Antistalking Web Site—www.antistalking.com Provides information for stalking victims, mental health professionals, and law enforcement, along with updates on current news and educational events.

Featured Site

New York City Voices—www.newyorkcityvoices.comNew York City Voices: A Consumer Journal for Mental Health Advocacy is a consumer-run newspaper founded in 1995 and published six times a year. Its purpose is to give consumers a forum for mutual support for independent living and to improve the quality of life for people with mental illness and their families. The articles are written by consumers, family members, and professionals and examine a range of mental health topics, such as stigma, parity, benefits, schizophrenia and violence, public policy, and legislative initiatives. Two columns—Ask the Doctor and Ask the Pharmacist—answer consumers' questions. The Internet edition, which is searchable by keyword, contains much of the contents of the hard-copy version and includes back issues and archived articles arranged by subject category.
