In Reply: Szasz was really a classic Cartesian dualist, holding that brain and mind are quite separate entities and causally independent of each other. That is not Appelbaum and Grisso's position and certainly is not ours. Appelbaum and Grisso make the point that the biologic variability of mental illness affects autonomy variably. So they do not confirm Szasz' views, and neither do we. Moreover, given the clinical and scientific evidence, we would claim that Szasz' views on mind and brain are no longer tenable.
