Abstract

Dr. Eth's Introduction: Ethical problems abound in the practice of geriatric psychiatry, in part as a consequence of a vulnerable patient population commonly presenting with cognitive impairment. The particular concern for preserving a patient's moral integrity is intensified when that patient experiences the erosion of self-determination associated with nursing home placement. In this month's column Robert Abrams, M.D., examines the ethical issues of competence, autonomy, and protection in the context of conducting dementia research with nursing home patients.
