Abstract

Dr. Sharfstein's Introduction: This month's column increases the evidence of the cost-effectiveness of psychiatric interventions and expands the literature on cost-offset studies. Outpatient mental health services for patients with somatization disorder are an effective way of reducing expensive inpatient care. Third-party limitations on out-patient psychiatric services are penny-wise and pound-foolish.
