Our experience points to the merit of developing a family support group in a large state psychiatric hospital. The group enhances individual family treatment and can be coordinated with similar groups in the community. The responses to the questionnaire, together with the consistently high level of attendance and participation in the groups, are further indications of the program's success. However, the impact of some important aspects of the program need to be more accurately assessed, and better evaluation tools are currently being developed.
