Abstract

Elderly patients pose an enormous challenge to the mental health care delivery system because of the high prevalence of mental disturbances and suicide in that age group. But the rewards of working with the elderly make the effort worth-while, the author believes. He notes the changes age makes in individuals, both as persons and as patients, discusses the rewards of working with aged patients, and outlines two alternative models for planning comprehensive mental health care services for the elderly.
