Editor's note: The following article grew out of Miss L. E. Lillis's experiences with her sister, who was first hospitalized for mental illness in 1969. When the account was written, the sister was still a halfway house patient in a Western state, but was making an extended trial visit at home. Henry P. Powers, A.C.S.W., is co-author of the article; he and Miss Lillis designed the questionnaire described. Mr. Powers is now a psychiatric social worker at Camarillo (Calif.) State Hospital; Miss Lillis is a probation officer in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
