An Acute Treatment Unit in a Psychiatric Emergency Service
Abstract
As part of its emergency services, a community mental health center established a three-bed acute treatment unit to which patients may be admitted for up to 24 hours. The unit, which serves patients from other divisions of the mental health center as well as those who come directly from the community, has played an important part in preventing prolonged hospitalization of many people in crisis.
