The author conducted an open clinical investigation of the therapeutic effectiveness and safety of haloperidol used alone or concomitantly with electrocoma therapy. A total of 51 men with affective psychoses were studied. Marked or moderate response to therapy was observed in 18 of 23 patients who received haloperidol alone, and 27 of 28 patients who received both haloperidol and ECT. Forty-four of the patients were discharged within 90 days following the initiation of the study; 41 have been followed clinically for a year and only six have required rehospitalization.
