Abstract

Soranusś writings survive only in fragments, and we know virtually nothing about the details of his life and death. Yet his legacy of acute clinical observation, and his emphasis on the importance of diagnosis and the need to adapt treatment to the circumstances of each patient, as well as his compassion and common sense, shine through the remaining documents. Soranusś contribution to the science and art of psychiatry should not be forgotten.
