The Evolution of a State Hospital Into a Human-Services Center
Abstract
Over the past 25 years Madison (Ind.) State Hospital has evolved from a facility that primarily provided long-term inpatient care into a human-services center oriented to community needs. It offers outpatient, day-care, and aftercare services, assistance to problem children and adolescents, rehabilitative programs for geriatric patients, treatment for alcoholics and drug addicts, and mental health education services to the community. The changes described are typical of those that have taken place in many state hospitals throughout the country in the past two decodes.
