Web Sites Worth Watching

Psychiatric Services offers a monthly listing of mental-health-related Web sites and other sites of interest. The list changes monthly as new sites are identified, existing sites add new features, and different categories of sites are included. We'd like maintaining the list to be an interactive process, so tell us about your favorite sites or what you'd like to be able to find on the Web. You can reach us by e-mail at psjournal@psych.org.

Associations

American Association of Directors of Psychiatric Residency Training—www.aadprt.org This Web site is intended to be a resource for psychiatric educators, psychiatric residents, and medical students. The site offers news about the association, a calendar of events, and a members-only section.

American Psychoanalytic Association—www.apsa.org Sections include general information about psychoanalysis, a literature search function, selected articles from the organization's journal and newsletter, information about APsA's educational and fellowship programs, an explanation of the association's educational standards, and a member database for locating a psychoanalyst.

Journals

Advances in Psychiatric Treatment—www.rcpsych.ac.uk/pub/apt.htm This bimonthly journal from the Royal College of Psychiatrists includes articles on physical and biological aspects of treatment, psychological and sociological interventions, management issues, and treatments specific to psychiatric subspecialties.

American Journal of Geriatric Psychiatry—ajgp.psychiatryonline.org All visitors to the site can view current and past tables of contents from the journal as well as author information and subscription information. Subscribers have access to full-text articles from the journal.

Government

Thomas—thomas.loc.gov Provides full-text access to current bills under consideration in the U.S. House of Representatives and the Senate. Users can also find historical documents, committee information, and information about the legislative process.

Medical

American Board of Medical Specialties—www.certifieddoctor.org This site allows the public to verify, free of charge, the board certification status, the location by city and state, and the specialty of any physician certified by one or more of the 24 member boards of the ABMS. Users can also search for a physician in a particular specialty in their geographic area.

Health News

Health A to Z—www.healthatoz.com Offers sections on age-specific health concerns, condition-specific discussion forums, and general information on healthy lifestyles, fitness, and alternative medicine. Information on live chats with experts and current news is displayed on the opening page. Users can also create a personalized opening page that addressess their own needs and interests.

Other Useful Resources

Dictionary of Slang Drug Terms—www.tcada.state.tx.us/research/slang Maintained by the Texas Commission on Alcohol and Drug Abuse, this site is designed to help drug counselors and researchers get more accurate information on clients' abuse histories and patterns through a better understanding of the slang used by that popluation. Slang terms are grouped by general drug use categories, specific pharmaceutical preparations, pharmacological effects and therapeutic uses, and routes of administration.

Children and Adults With Attention Deficit Disorders—www.chadd.org

Children and Adults With Attention Deficit Disorders (CHADD) is a national organization with more than 32,000 members and over 500 chapters. It was founded in 1987 in response to the frustration and sense of isolation experienced by parents and their children with attention deficit disorders. On its Web site, CHADD uses fact sheets, a list of frequently asked questions, and news releases to provide up-to-date information on diagnosis and treatment as well as on other issues, such as the legal rights of children with the disorder. Visitors can read current and past articles from Attention, the organization's membership magazine, which features interviews with experts and personal accounts. Referrals to professionals are handled by state and local chapters, and the site provides their telephone numbers.
