Current aspects of mandatory treatment for severe, persistent mental disorders are covered in this monograph. The first part presents the family's perspective and the consumer's perspective on mandatory treatment, plus an examination of the concept of therapeutic jurisprudence and of involuntary treatment of substance abuse disorders. Chapters in part 2 describe various approaches to mandatory treatment: outpatient civil commitment, conditional release for insanity acquittees, court-authorized medication for incompetent hospitalized patients, and a competency-based approach to court-ordered outpatient treatment.
